| The Galloway Hills are approximately 40 mins by car (quiet roads). Walking in the Galloway Hills to blow away the cobwebs or short walks in the Galloway Forest Park or Wood of Cree Nature Reserve.

Archaeology - Whithorn is the home of the earliest recorded Christian community in Scotland and was the episcopal seat of St. Ninian, the apostle of the southern Picts. Whithorn is the site of an archaeological dig and The Whithorn Visitor Centre offers an excellent exhibition and Audio-visual introduction to Ninian and the history of Whithorn.
The Priory Museum belonging to Historic Scotland holds the finest collection of early Christian carved stones including the Latinus and Petri Stones. The crypts and the Priory ruins are also accessible to the public. www.whithorn.com
Scottish Whisky - Scotland's most southerly whisky distillery is located at Bladnoch. Bladnoch Distillery offers guided tours, live music events/entertainment and an excellent gift shop, not forgetting of course, some fine single malt whisky tasting! Both of the Galloway Cottages are set in the beautiful Machars region of Wigtownshire, Dumfries and Galloway, South West Scotland (click here for maps and directions). An area of outstanding natural beauty, Wigtownshire is host to wide range of activities and visitor attractions to suit all interests.

The Isle of Whithorn is 2 miles from the cottages. A very quaint village at the tip of the Machars peninsula. A fishing village, with sailing boats in the summer. Very quiet, with a nice pub on the harbour, The Steampacket Inn which is popular with holiday makers.
Monreith Bay is approximately 12 mins by car. Sandy Bay, good for children and dogs. There is also a 9 hole golf course with stunning views.

Books & Literature - for book lovers, Wigtown, Scotland's National Book Town is only 15 miles away. Over 20 book related businesses including dealers, book shops and publishers. Torhouse Standing Stones - Torhouse Stone Circle, 4 miles west of Wigtown (B733), is a circle of nineteen granite boulders from the 2nd Millennium BC surrounding three central stones. One of the best preserved sites of this type in Britain.
